Integrated AFCI

The National Electric Code® 2011 sets new requirements for PV systems that are installed on buildings. These requirements apply to newly installed PV systems that reach a DC voltage of more than 80 V. Such systems must be equipped with an automatic electric arc detector and circuit interrupter. The automatic electric arc detector provides supplementary protection against fires which may arise as a result of electric arcing.Only one inverter manufacturer is currently offering a code-compliant, integrated AFCI solution for areas that have or will adopt NEC 2011. That company is SMA.

Commercial Systems

Commercial PV inspections are easy with the Sunny Tripower TL-US from SMA. The Sunny Tripower is the first and only three-phase inverter on the market with integrated AFCI. All other three phase inverters require additional components to meet the NEC 2011 AFCI requirements. Integrated AFCI means that NEC 2011 AFCI code compliance will always be met quickly, safely and easily.

1,000 VDC Systems

This system design innovation has been applied as a standard best practice in the European solar market, and has recently entered the North American commercial market. Provisions do exist in the current code versions to support 1,000 VDC photovoltaic systems. They can be installed on non-residences and residences greater than two-family dwellings, in areas inaccessible to unqualified personnel (which includes rooftops), provided all equipment used is listed and approved. As increasing numbers of integrators, system designers and solar installers begin to adopt this concept it’s important to understand the technology and the components associated with 1,000 VDC systems. We now have access to high-quality, UL listed components including the most important piece of the puzzle – the inverter. The new Sunny Central CP-US series provides the safety and reliability that AHJs across the country have come to expect from SMA.

The SMA Solar Academy

Solar Academy curriculum consists of a broad range of seminars and webinars covering grid-tied and off-grid products, commercial and utility systems, communication devices, code compliance and installation best practices. Most live classes qualify for North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) continuing education credit. Classes are held at SMA America headquarters in California as well as at rotating sites all over North America.
